The Revitalisation of One Planet York event will include a keynote speech from Mike Berners-Lee, author of How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything (published 2010 and republished in a new and updated edition 2020) and ‘ There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years’ (2019) and The Burning Question (with Duncan Clark, 2013). He is Professor in Practice at the Lancaster Environment Centre and Fellow of the Institute for Social Futures at Lancaster University, and founder of Small World Consulting.
In a recent interview, Mike Berners-Lee spoke of his optimism, despite the climate threats we are facing: “The optimism started growing before this virus hit, because of kids taking to the streets and joining protests like Extinction Rebellion. I was noticing a change of attitude in the business community too. It was beginning to feel like this intractable system was beginning to show some cracks.
“And then the virus happened. It was a distraction but has proven that change is possible. We can choose how we live and it can be different . . . there’s everything to play for.”
